Into the Wild

sun_behind_cloudsI also caught Sean Penn’s latest on dvd this weekend. It’s a very nice intothewildstory. But it’s not the most cinematic film I’ve seen. For the most part it is driven by purely literal elements. This is a slow and deliberate meditation on consumer culture, with voice over and written lettering moving across the screen. I liked the movie, but it’s meaning is generally not created with cinematic means.

Until the end that is:  A beautifully crafted montage of images of the sun peeking out from behind the clouds accompanied by the sound of a beating heart is a real cinematic achievement which elevates the movie considerably. Sean Penn’s best to date.
